Best Luxury Resorts in the Maldives, an Overwater Villas Guide

If you’re planning a trip to the Maldives, you’re probably already asking the same question most of my clients do:

Which resort should I actually book—and are overwater villas worth it?

Short answer: yes… but not all overwater villas (or resorts) are created equal.

This is one of those destinations where the details matter—a lot. The right resort can feel like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The wrong one can feel surprisingly underwhelming for the price.

Here’s how I guide clients through choosing the best luxury resorts in the Maldives, plus what to know before booking an overwater villa.

Are Overwater Villas Worth It?

For most clients: absolutely.

Overwater villas are what make the Maldives feel like the Maldives:

  • Direct access to the ocean

  • Private decks (often with pools)

  • Unobstructed sunset or sunrise views

  • A sense of total privacy

That said, there are a few things people don’t always consider:

  • Some villas are far from the main resort areas

  • Wind exposure can vary depending on location

  • Not all reefs are great for snorkeling

👉 This is where choosing the right resort matters more than just choosing “an overwater villa.”

What Actually Matters When Choosing a Maldives Resort

Before we get into specific resorts, here’s what I focus on when matching clients:

  • House reef quality (for snorkeling right off your villa)

  • Villa size + design (they vary more than you’d think)

  • Dining variety (some resorts are limited)

  • Transfer logistics (speedboat vs seaplane)

  • Overall vibe (ultra-private vs more social)

Best Luxury Resorts in the Maldives

Soneva Jani

Best for: Iconic overwater villas + privacy

This is the Maldives you’ve seen all over Instagram—water slides, expansive villas, and unreal lagoon views. Villas are some of the largest in the Maldives, and the experience feels very private and design-forward.

Good to know: It’s spread out, so bikes and buggies are part of the experience.

Cheval Blanc Randheli

Best for: Elevated design + top-tier service

If you want something ultra-polished and refined, this is one of my top recommendations. Service is exceptional, and the design feels very intentional and high-end.

Good to know: Pricing reflects the level of service—this is firmly in the ultra-luxury category.

The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort

Best for: Strong value in the luxury category

One of the more recognizable names in the Maldives—and for good reason. Overwater villas are spacious, many come with private pools, and the service is consistent.

Good to know: Great option for clients using points, but I still often book it for cash stays due to value. STARS amenities can be added here, giving you extra value to your stay.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

Best for: Dining variety + larger resort feel

If food is a priority, this is one of the best in the Maldives. You have a wide range of dining options, which is rare here. You’ll receive complimentary daily breakfast as well as dining credits by booking through a Hilton for Luxury advisor.

Good to know: The resort is larger, so it feels less “barefoot remote” and more expansive.

Six Senses Laamu

Best for: Incredible snorkeling + laid-back luxury

This is one of my top picks for clients who care about marine life. The house reef is excellent, and the vibe is more relaxed and eco-conscious.

Good to know: It’s further out, which means a longer transfer—but worth it for the experience.

How to Choose the Right Overwater Villa

This is where I spend the most time with clients.

Sunset vs Sunrise

  • Sunset villas: More popular, warmer light, higher demand

  • Sunrise villas: Often calmer water, better for early risers

Lagoon vs Reef Side

  • Lagoon: Better for swimming, softer sand, brighter water

  • Reef: Better for snorkeling, more marine life

With or Without a Pool

Most of my clients opt for a private pool (and most come with one anyways) —it adds to the experience, especially for longer stays.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Booking purely based on photos (they all look good)

  • Not considering transfer time after a long international flight

  • Choosing a resort with limited dining (this matters after a few days)

  • Assuming all overwater villas are equal

Is the Maldives Worth It?

For the right client, 100%.

This is a destination I typically recommend for:

  • Honeymoons

  • Milestone trips

  • Clients who want true “disconnect” luxury

It’s not about doing a lot—it’s about where you are while doing very little.

Why Booking Through a Travel Advisor Matters Here

The Maldives is one of the destinations where working with an advisor makes a noticeable difference.

When my clients book through me, I help with:

  • Choosing the right resort (not just the most popular)

  • Villa placement requests

  • Comparing transfer logistics

  • Adding perks like credits, upgrades, and VIP recognition

And just as importantly:

Making sure you don’t spend $10K+ on the wrong experience.
